MOE EXPAND KINDERGARTEN
PROGRAM TO TOKEWA, MILI
The
Ministry of Education continues to expand the Kindergarten Program
in the public schools under a collaborative effort from several
Ministry Divisions. The RMI Kindergarten Program replaces the
former US federally funded Head Start Project and is currently
funded under the Supplemental Educational Grant (SEG). With
the new set up, the Ministry is able to increase community participation
and student enrollment by going beyond the 1240 student limit
set by the US Department of Health and Human Services under
the Head Start scheme.
In an effort to ensure that there is a Kindergarten classroom
in each of the 76 elementary schools, the MOE maintenance grew
has been busy building add-on classrooms to existing school
buildings to accommodate the growing need, especially in school
communities that have never had a Head Start centers and therefore
do not have a Kindergarten classroom.
When the expansion project began in SY 2005-2006, there were
fifteen schools without a kindergarten program. During the school
year, four sites were opened at Rita, Delap, Enewa and Enejelar
elementary schools. During SY 2006-2007 five more sites were
opened at Mejel, Jah, Lukonwod, Wodmej and Jabnwoden elementary
school. This year two more sites opened at Tutu and Tokewa elementary
school leaving only four more sites to be open as soon as MOE
received the SEG funds.
The expansion project is a collaborative effort as the Elementary
Division utilizes school renovation and kindergarten funds to
finance the project while the Division of Property and Management
provides the design and construction of the kindergarten classrooms.
The reaction MOE gets from the community, the PTA and the school
staff on the expansion project is very positive as the completion
time is very fast. In fact the planning and purchasing of the
kindergarten classroom takes longer than the construction phase.
There is also the elimination of wait time and material lost
as the MOE maintenance grew takes everything to theclick
